Yesterday’s Memphis Flyer ran an article written by Taylor Eason, their Food and Wine writter, that caught my eye. She listed some interesting facts, like the cork oak tree takes 40 to 45 years before a sapling can produce a stopper thick and consistent enough for wine and like in 2004 red wine edged out white wine sales for the first time in recent history.
What about wine in a can? The article says that’s the next new trend coming out of Australia. Try giving wine as a gift if that ever becomes the norm. Here in the U.S. we’re already selling more box wine, according to The Tri Valley Herald, wine in a box sales rose 12% last year and ACNielsen states that sales of 3-liter boxes increased by a whopping 77%. Wow! Well, even if we won’t be giving boxed wine as a gift, we might end up drinking it. More companies are selling higher-end wines, like syrah and pinot grigio in boxes and since the bag inside the box collapes and doesn’t allow air to touch the wine, it stays fresh longer.
I love fun facts. Click over and read the article for more. And here’s a toast that was posted in the article, it’s the author’s fav and I think it’s now become mine:
To lying, cheating, stealing, and drinking — may you lie to save your brother, may you cheat death, may you steal someone’s heart, and may you drink with me.
Friendship’s the wine of life. Let’s drink of it and to it.
I’ll be talkin’ to ya later!
