Maureen’s Back In The News

Well, Maureen Petrovsky’s back in the media’s eye again, the Philadelphia Daily News has an article about wine for New Year’s Eve and they interviewed none less than Ms. Petrovsky. You might remember that she was on the Today Show last week talking about wine gifts and I reported about it here on my blog. I like Maureen Petrovsky, she’s a knowledgable resource and regularly appears on CNN to offer wine and champagne tutorials. I’m going to try to read her book The Wine Club here very soon.

Anyway, today she’s talking about wine for the New Year’s celebration and covers which wines to take to a dinner or party, how it should be presented, how much wine is needed, and has a few paragraphs about champagne.

Interestingly, she informs us of what is “fashionable” this year. Yeah! Fashionable! She says the bubbly “of choice” this year is pink champagne. Apparently it gained popularity among Hollywood’s “young party crowd” and is now the bubbly “of choice”. I have nothing against pink champagne, but give me a break, do people really choose what they drink because of Hollywood’s “young party crowd”? I’m guessing yes. Sad.

The other sparkler that’s “in” this year is Prosecco, an Italian sparkling wine. These are typically labeled “blanc de blanc” because they are made with white chardonnay grapes. Proceccos usually have a fairly sweet taste. Ms. Petrovsky, or the reporter, April Lisante, made one error in the article. At the end where she’s talking about ITALIAN Prosecco, she states, “But the semi-sweet taste of Freixenet Cordon Negro, and it’s $10.99 price, is better for a big crowd, she said.” Well, Ms. Lisante, Freixenet is from Spain, not Italy.

I’ll be talkin’ to ya later!
